General information on Cl₂ / Chlorine
Chlorine (Cl₂) is a chemical element. Together with fluorine, bromine, iodine, astatine and tennessine it belongs to the group of halogens. Elemental chlorine is present in gaseous form under normal conditions in the form of the diatomic molecule Cl₂. It is one of the most reactive elements and reacts with almost all other elements and many compounds. The high reactivity also causes the toxicity of elemental chlorine.
Chlorine, obtained almost exclusively by electrolysis, is used for the synthesis of chlorine-containing compounds such as vinyl chloride, a starting product for the production of the plastic PVC.
